A national responsibility.

The goal of the Livestock Traceability pillar is to facilitate the identification and tracking of all animals across Canada in the event of a natural disaster or infectious disease outbreak to ensure efficient emergency management. This pillar is based on proven, effective tools that can protect animal health, public health, and food safety. In the event of a disease emergency, these tools can help reduce response time, thereby limiting economic, environmental and social impacts. Canada is currently free of certain highly infectious livestock diseases such as Foot and mouth disease (FMD). The system that is in place across Canada serves to protect animals and the livelihoods of farmers from devastating diseases such as FMD.

The Livestock Traceability requirements are based on the federal traceability standards under the Health of Animals Regulations (HAR) that were introduced nationally in 2017.
