Milk with meals is a still a good healthy eating strategy.
The revised Canada food guide was released today, prompting many diet-related discussions around the country. As a Registered Dietitian and Nutrition Educator, I’m pleased that milk products continue to be a foundational part of the Guide—and with good reason! Milk products are a nutritious, widely available, affordable, local and convenient food for Canadians to choose.
Dairy products continue to play an important role in the daily choices Canadians make. Recent evidence from Statistics Canada shows that Canadians choose dairy products often: according to data collected in the recent Canadian Community Health Survey, nearly 94% of Canadians chose dairy on the day they were surveyed.
Many people may be unaware of the benefits of consuming dairy products. For example, milk provides Canadians with high-quality protein and 6 out of the 8 key nutrients identified as currently lacking in Canadians’ diets: calcium, magnesium, zinc, vitamin A, vitamin D and potassium.
Strong scientific evidence shows the nutritional benefits of milk products in promoting optimal growth in children, promoting bone health, and preserving muscles in aging adults. Dairy products have also been proven to assist in the prevention of chronic diseases such as colon cancer, hypertension, type 2 diabetes, stroke and heart disease.
In addition to recommending quality food choices, the BC Dairy Association commends the Food Guide’s emphasis on cooking more often, eating meals with others and the importance of taking time to enjoy your food. We are enthusiastic supporters of helping people cook and eat together more often through the Better Together BC initiative.
Health Canada is providing consumers with recipes to help implement the new Food Guide. Dairy products are featured prominently throughout the recipe collection, in dishes such as Apple Pie Oatmeal, Savoury Broccoli and Cheese Muffins, Creamy Clam Chowder, and Slow-Cooked Lasagna.
We look forward to helping Canadians improve the quality of their diet, including the consumption of nutritious dairy products.
