Not only do dairy farmers produce safe, nutritious food, but continue to do so in an economically, socially and environmentally sustainable way that benefits Canadians.
In fact, in 2009 dairy farmers across Canada adopted an ambitious policy on environment, aiming to reduce their footprint on the environment through the adoption of practices that:
- limit the use of energy and water in dairy production
- conserve soil
- encourage the use and production of renewable energy on farms
- reduce greenhouse gas emissions from our cows and farms
Canadian dairy farms have diminished greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 1 per cent per year since 1990, largely exceeding the targets set under the Kyoto Protocol, which was to reduce GHG emissions to 6 per cent below 1990 levels by 2012.
