BC Dairy Farmers Help Provide Meals for BC Kids Through Restaurant Promotion

BRITISH COLUMBIABC Dairy Association has partnered with Breakfast Club of Canada and 32 local restaurants to help provide vulnerable children in BC with a healthy breakfast. From November 30th to December 28th, 2020, BC dairy farmers are donating one meal to Breakfast Club of Canada for every purchase of a featured breakfast item from participating restaurants.

“Supporting the most vulnerable members of our local communities with healthy, nutritious food is a cause that BC’s dairy farmers are extremely passionate about,” says Jeremy Dunn, General Manager of BC Dairy Association. “It’s something that farmers value every year, but in 2020 we recognize it’s more important than ever.”

With a mission to partner with all sectors to deliver high-quality school food programs, Breakfast Club of Canada is a natural partner for dairy farmers, who have supported schools with nutrition education for over 30 years in BC. Currently, there are 181 breakfast clubs serving meals to over 8800 children daily in BC, and the need is growing.  “Business closures brought about by the pandemic have led to a rise in unemployment and poverty,” says Tommy Kulczyk, General Manager of Breakfast Club of Canada. ”When surveyed, almost 1 in 7 Canadians indicated that their household experienced food insecurity in the last 30 days, so this support for our programs coming directly from dairy farmers is particularly meaningful right now.”

In addition to supporting Breakfast Club of Canada, BC Dairy Association hopes to boost sales for local restaurants during an extremely challenging time. Although social distancing requirements are in place, restaurants are still open. British Columbians can show their support by continuing to visit their favourite local eateries with their household members, particularly by ordering take-out.  “It’s no secret that 2020 has been incredibly difficult for our local restaurants,” says Ian Tostenson of the BC Restaurant and Foodservice Association. “When dairy farmers and restaurants can come together to support a great cause through a promotion like this, everybody wins.”
