Celebrate Diwali from November 13th – 17th. Join the festivities and make a delicious pumpkin halwa!
Diwali means “Festival of Lights”, with light representing the triumph of good over evil, prosperity over poverty, and knowledge over ignorance. This festival originated in South Asia and is now celebrated in many cities across the world.
Families place lanterns or candles around their homes, in their gardens, as well as on rooftops and outer-walls to symbolize the inner light that protects them from spiritual darkness. They celebrate by setting off fireworks, dancing, storytelling, and exchanging gifts of sweets.
Many South Asian sweets, or “mithai”, use milk as part of their base. It’s boiled down until it almost has a similar consistency to condensed milk. It adds sweetness and thickness to recipes.
