Meet the Dietitians

Sydney Massey, MPH, RD
Director of Nutrition Education
I love teaching. I’m fascinated with food, cooking, how people eat and how this relates to health. And I love growing food. How fortunate I am to have found this position at the BC Dairy Association, at the crossroads of nutrition, education and agriculture. I have been working here for over 30 years, first as a nutrition educator, and now as the Director of Nutrition Education. My Masters degree in Public Health prepared me well for this job.
I’m proud of the many projects I’ve been part of, from developing the Calcium Calculator, to the FoodTrack series of nutrition resources, to pioneering the important role dietitians can play in supporting and promoting the use of local food, and most recently, to promoting eating together through the Better Together initiative.
I grew up in New York City, and while I still love it and visit my large, boisterous family often, I am happy to live in Vancouver where I can enjoy city life, grow some of my own food and tangle with a jungle of a backyard, where my husband and I satisfy our curiosity for how things grow.

Lynne Sawchuk, MPE, RD
Nutrition Educator
I am a Registered Dietitian lucky enough to be working as a nutrition educator at BC Dairy Association since 1992. Over the years I have done countless nutrition education workshops for teachers and health professionals, and along with my colleagues, I have had the opportunity to develop nutrition education resources and programs that really work.
I grew up in Winnipeg and originally came to BC to pursue a career in sport nutrition. I completed a Masters degree in Physical Education and a Bachelor of Education degree at UBC. Prior to joining BC Dairy Association, I worked at the Sport Medicine Council of BC coordinating sport medicine and sport science services for elite athletes in BC.
After becoming a mom, I developed a passion for teaching healthy eating to school-aged children. To this day, you can still find me doing nutrition education as a volunteer at my son's former elementary school - from packing lunches for snowshoe trips to growing spuds in tubs!

Carmen Gorlick, RD
Nutrition Educator
I am a food lover, passionate dietitian, and an adventure seeker at heart. I became a dietitian as a way to combine my love of science, food, and my desire to help individuals lead a healthy lifestyle.
I am proud to say I was born and raised in the prairies. I grew up in Saskatoon and studied nutrition at the University of Saskatchewan. Shortly after becoming a Registered Dietitian, I moved to beautiful BC and fell in love with the moderate climate and the endless options of outdoor activities. I currently am working towards my master’s degree in public health and social policy through the University of Victoria.
I feel it is important for fellow British Columbians to have an understanding of the journey of our food, from farm to table. I believe this will help foster a sense of gratitude for the incredibly abundant, safe, and delicious food supply we have access to right in our own backyards. I am grateful to work for hard-working BC farmers who contribute to this food supply everyday.

Joel Barohn, MS, RD, Chef
Nutrition Educator
I am fortunate to work for the hard working dairy farmers throughout BC. Before joining the BC Dairy Association, I worked as a Health and Wellness Program Coordinator for a Texas based dairy association. I am proud to say I have worked for dairy farmers in both Canada and the US.
Prior to moving to Vancouver, I attended the Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park, New York, and later taught culinary school to the public. My passion for food and a growing interest in nutrition, led me to discover the intersection between what we eat and our health. I soon decided to become a Registered Dietitian and combine my passion for education, good food, and wellness. In addition to community engagement, I also enjoy talking to youth about sports nutrition.
Outside of work I love to travel, look at art, play sports, explore the outdoors, and spend time with my wife. I believe success is gained through partnerships and feel as a community, we can make a healthier BC.
