Grilled ham and cheese sandwich with honey apple butter

This easy and delicious snack is the perfect balance of sweet, savoury, and cheesy goodness. The ultimate snack for any time of day. Recipe created by Chef Ned Bell.

Equipment

  • Blender or food processor
  • 10” heavy bottomed stainless steel or cast-iron skillet

Ingredients

Apple butter

  • 1 large BC apple, core and seeds removed, diced
  • ½ (125 ml) cup honey
  • ⅛ cup (25 ml) apple cider vinegar
  • ½ tsp (2.5 ml) salt

Grilled cheese sandwich

  • 2 slices of your favourite bread
  • 1 cup + ⅛ cup (275 ml) grated white cheddar
  • 6 tbsp (90 ml) salted butter, softened
  • ½ fresh apple

Directions

Apple butter

  1. Dice one apple with the core and seeds removed.
  2. In a small pot with a lid, over medium heat, simmer the apples, honey, apple cider vinegar and salt, lid the pot and cook for 25 minutes until the apples are tender. Set aside to cool, puree with a blender or food processor if you want the apple butter smooth or leave it slightly chunky.

Grilled Cheese

  1. Preheat your skillet. Butter one side of each piece of bread. Sandwich the cheese in between the bread slices (buttered side out) and lay the sandwich in the preheated pan.
  2. Brown the sandwich carefully and flip it over several times to get a delicious golden crust and melt the cheese inside for a classic, gooey texture.
  3. Add the additional ⅛ cup of cheddar cheese to the outside of the sandwich for a cheesier crust.
  4. Serve the sandwich with apple butter and apple slices.
