As the third part of our breakfast series, we highlight South East Asian cuisine with this traditional Filipino breakfast.
South East Asian—Filipino
Information provided by Kristine Louie
Kristine’s Story: I was lucky to spend some time in South East Asia this summer and indulge in the culture. As I traveled around, I noticed a collective theme among several South East Asian countries; most diets included egg and rice at breakfast. Although there was this commonality, small differences made each country’s cuisine special in its own way. My personal favourite was the breakfast I ate in the Philippines. The combination of both sweet and savory foods provided a good variety and kept things exciting.
My breakfast consisted of two fried eggs, garlic fried rice, grilled pork, finished off with a side of fresh, sweet mango, papaya and pineapple. Traditionally, any protein is acceptable to have with breakfast; from grilled pork to beef or fish. Furthermore, your egg can be cooked any way you like (but I prefer mine runny so I can eat it with my rice!).
If you’re feeling adventurous, try making your own garlic fried rice and BBQ pork skewers. The best part is, you can enjoy both of these dishes for breakfast, lunch or dinner!
Reminder: You can always backtrack to part 1 or 2 of the breakfast series and make your very own South Asian or Chinese inspired breakfasts as well.
