Butterscotch steamer

Made with steamed milk and homemade butterscotch sauce, this cozy and delicious drink is perfect way to warm up during the colder months.

Butterscotch Sauce

  • 1/4 cup (60 mL) butter
  • 3/4 cup (175 mL) packed light brown sugar
  • 1/3 cup (75 mL) 35% whipping cream
  • 1 tbsp (15 mL) corn syrup


  • 2 cups (500 mL) milk
  • whipped cream (canned)


  1. Butterscotch sauce: In a saucepan, melt together sugar, whipping cream, butter and corn syrup over medium heat. Bring to a simmer. Stir for about 2 minutes or until sugar is dissolved and mixture is smooth. Set aside.
  2. In another saucepan, heat milk over medium heat until steaming. Spoon 2 tbsp (30 mL) of the Butterscotch Sauce into each mug. Pour milk into mugs. Top each with whipped cream and drizzle with more Butterscotch Sauce to serve.

Iced variation: Omit heating the milk and pour over ice cubes in glasses.

Butterscotch rum variation: Add 1 tbsp (15 mL) dark rum to each mug with heated milk.

Butterscotch coffee variation: Add 1 espresso shot to each mug with heated milk.


Feel free to add as much Butterscotch Sauce to suit your liking when making your cup.

Storage: Cover and refrigerate remaining Butterscotch Sauce for up to 3 weeks. To reheat sauce, place in microwave-safe bowl or in a saucepan over low heat until proper consistency.
